Clatskanie Mayor Bob Brajcich speaks to the audience at the special sports recognition assembly congratulating the high school softball and track and field members.

The Clatskanie Middle High School Girls Softball Team and members of the schools track and field team continue to be recognized for outstanding accomplishments during their regular 2019 season and at state competition.

Clatskaine Mayor Bob Brajcich proclaimed the day, Clatskanie Lady Tigers Softball Day, during a special school assembly held on Wednesday morning June 11.

“They are our pride and joy,” he said. “They are amazing!”

The team competed in the Coast Range League with a league championship record of 12-0 and an undefeated season of 27 wins. Clatskanie defeated the Dayton Pirates 10-5 on Friday, May 31, at the University of Oregon in Eugene, to win the OSAA State 3A Championship title.

Sophomore pitcher Shelby Blodgett has been named 3A All-Oregon Softball Player of the Year and Clatskanie Softball Coach Kevin Sprague has been named 3A All-Oregon Softball Coach of the Year. Senior outfielder Maris Jackson, Sophomore infielder Alexis Smith and sophomore infielder Olivia Sprague have been named to the First Team in the OSAA 3A All-Oregon Softball Team. Junior catcher Trinity Hamm has been named as Honorable Mention for the OSAA 3A All- Oregon Softball Team.

Brajcich also proclaimed June 13 as Cooper Blodgett Day. Blodgett competed in track and field setting school records in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash and went on to win both events at state.

Clatskanie Middle High School Athletic Director Ryan Thompkins said it is the first time the school has won a state softball championship. He said the achievements by the softball team and the track and field squad are important.

“They are student athletes, they aren’t professional athletes,” he said. “The student part comes first. A lot of the lessons learned translate into the classroom. If you looked at the teams’ GPA’s and how well these students do in the classroom, you’d see that they achieve as much in the classroom as they achieve on the field.”

Tompkins said the special assemblies held at the school for the sports teams connect the entire student body.

“It is a good way to recognize them, he said. “Just as we celebrate the drama, the music and all the different aspects that we allow students to grow here in our school district.” he said. “This also allows all the students to feel connected to the teams through this process.”

Clatskanie High Mens 4X400 meter relay placed 8th in state competition. The team consists of Trent Berntsen, Cooper Blodgett, Jake Bruce, Jonathan Moravec. Member Jose Quevido was the alternate, but didn’t race. In the 200 meter, Bruce placed fourth at state. He also placed fourth in the long jump. Berntsen placed seventh in the 800 meter race and sixth in the 1500 meter. Natalie Katon won ninth place in the shot put. Moravec placed twelfth in the javelin.
