Clatskanie will host Scio at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 24, in the second round of the 16-team state softball playoffs.
Clatskanie advanced after beating Brookings-Harbor 15-0 on Wednesday, May 23, in the first round playoffs.
“We are the number one seed, so if we keep winning we will continue to host games until the finals next Friday in Eugene,” Clatskanie Middle High School Athletic Director Ryan Tompkins said.
Clatskanie Softball Head Coach Kevin Sprague said the team’s success comes from years of work.
“It started when they were 8 and 10 years old,” he said. “Almost all of them played tournament ball when they were young and we have a core of them that played high level ball. So, each year is just building on last year’s success. They get better each year.”
Sprague said the players take away life-long lessons from their commitment and experience.
“No matter where they are, or what they are doing, something about what we have done here sticks with them,” Sprague said.
Sprague said he is gratified to be the school’s softball coach and to lead the players.
“It is really gratifying to show up each day and know that you have a group of kids that are taking in what you are talking about,” he said. “To see it bloom means it is worth the time.”
