W.O.E.C. on my mind….I could set it to John Denver music. West Oregon Electric Cooperative was created to solve the problem of providing low rural rates. What to do? The basic idea is to determine costs, charge enough for that and annually return excess dollars. Included in this is installing internal efficiencies, lowering costs and finding new sources of energy and distribution. In my opinion WOEC has gone in the opposite direction. Income has steadily decreased. Rates have increased. Meanwhile, Green-Energy has thundered onto the stage, plummeted in cost and exploded in distribution. WOEC has refused to fully research or develop Green-energy. Our system is tied to a singular source: an aging concrete hydro system with a sprawling, at-risk distribution network. Not moving off this dime guarantees rate increases. WOEC Board’s “leave it to us, we know best” should end. Respectfully, well meaning directors committed to a chain-of-command led by a dominate chairman is not working. That works in middle management positions in the military and large corporations. We are in a crisis. We need innovative leadership and independent creative directors not afraid of brain-storming, testing and installing new Green-energy ideas. This takes a special kind of person. How to get them on board? Vote. Sure, a lot of voting has already taken place. Truth is, most members don’t vote because they think it won’t matter. This time it does.
