Veterans Day, Monday, November 11, 2019 is a fitting day for the celebration of life for Larry Allen Willson at 2 p.m. at Longview Memorial Park, 5050 Mt. Solo Road, Longview, Washington. He passed away during a brief stay at Longview Hospice Care Center on November 1, 2019 with his loving family at his side.
Larry was born in Longview, Washington on June 25, 1949 to Clyde and Vernie (Agnes Richard) Willson. Except for two years in Randle, Washington, the Willsons lived in the Clatskanie area. After graduating from Clatskanie High School in 1967, Larry was drafted by lottery into the U.S. Army, 9th Infantry Division. His unit fought in the Vietnam War where he was seriously wounded in combat. In 1969 he was awarded the Purple Heart and other commendations.
On October 19, 1973, he married Mandy Rice, and they observed their 46th wedding anniversary last month at their home in Longview.
Larry worked at Beaver Lumber Company in Clatskanie and the Trojan power plant in Rainier before retiring in 2002.
Friends and family will remember his self-effacing sense of humor and his good-natured acceptance of his lengthy disability. Despite it, he took his children camping and agate hunting. He especially enjoyed fishing and hunting and visits to the museums at Fort Lewis, Washington.
Larry is survived by his wife Mandy; daughters Lisa (Donnie) White and Joy Rice; son Larry (Kristi) Willson, Jr; brothers Curt (Susanne) Willson and Verne Willson; sister Shirley (Darrell) Veltcamp; granddaughters Brittney, McKatelyn and Destinee Dozier, Summer, Sierra and Kaylee Willson; three great-grandchildren; two nieces; and a nephew.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister Rita Johnson.
