A petition that supports keeping Clatskanie’s elementary school principal is circulating around town.
Petitioners and concerned parents who support the renewal of Brad Thorud’s contract with Clatskanie School District were in front of Hi-School Pharmacy and Safeway on the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 19.
The petition was sparked by an upcoming board meeting that will include a discussion of Thorud’s contract as principal of Clatskanie Elementary School. The meeting should take place at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 in the library at the elementary school.
The school board held a closed-door session earlier this month to discuss Superintendent Lloyd Hartley’s performance and to consider records that are legally exempt from public inspection.
An email that was circulated to parents by Clatskanie Elementary School teachers said Thorud’s contract was in jeopardy of not being renewed. The email urged those with opinions about Thorud to contact the school board and included email addresses of board members.
"We personally feel that we have an amazing principal here at CES," the email read. "We are incredibly saddened and worried about the possibility of his contract not being renewed."
Hartley declined comment regarding Thorud’s contract, citing personnel privacy.
